Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How often should I wax my car?
A. The finish on your car is susceptible to so many forces, including the sun, acid rain, and paint contaminants (more +/-)such as road tar, and rail dust. How often you wax your car depends on its environment. If you’re vehicle stays in a garage during the day and night, you can get away with 2 or 3 times a year. Most people, however do not have that luxury, and should have their car waxed about every three months. This will protect from fading and oxidation. Our Concours package includes everything you need to maintain your vehicle, including a clay bar treatment to remove surface contaminants which will help the wax adhere to the paint.
Q. I heard that newer cars don't need to be waxed, is that true?
A. This myth is commonly used by car salesmen to promote their product. (more +/-)Vehicles do need to be waxed and cared for to retain their finish. A clearcoat is not a wax replacement. It is merely a clear paint coat sprayed on top of the pigmented coat, and needs to be protected to prevent oxidation and fading.
Q. My car just isn't as shiny as it was when it was new. Is there anything I can do about that?
A. A vehicle’s paint can fade over time, especially with large amounts of sun exposure. (more +/-)The best thing to do is preventative maintenance from the time you purchase your car. However, if your vehicle is already showing signs of cosmetic wear, it can often be helped with a restorative process using some of our Autoglym® products. Someone from our staff will be happy to examine your specific vehicle to analyze what it needs to be restored.
Q. What is carnauba?
A. Carnauba is a naturally occurring wax that is produced by a tree in South America. (more +/-)It has long been recognized as a superior form of protection for painted surfaces. The carnauba blend that Detailstogo uses is fortified with a sealant that prolongs the protection that the wax provides.
Q. The leather in my car is drying out. What can I do to protect it and keep it from cracking?
A. Leather, like skin, needs moisture to look its best. Leather should be treated regularly (more +/-)with a leather balm or crème to replenish the moisture and suppleness of the leather. Our Checkered Flag® Leather Balm is the perfect solution to maintain your leather. This is included in both our Reflections and Concours packages.
Q. I'm getting ready to sell my car. How do I get the most money out of it?
A. Used vehicle pricing is very subjective, and appearance weighs heavily. Many of our clients have found that they maximized (more +/-)their resale value with a Concours or Reflections package prior to selling their vehicle. The best way to increase resale value is to have your car detailed on a regular basis.
Q. I just bought a used car, and it was smoked in, is there any way to get rid of the smell?
A. The most effective way to remove the smell is to get rid of the problem. The first step in the process is to clean all hard surfaces and (more +/-)shampoo all upholstered and carpeted surfaces. Detailstogo also offers an ozone treatment that kills the bacteria that causes the odors. The ozone generator simply runs in your vehicle long enough to starve the air of oxygen, which kills odor causing bacteria and sterilizes the vehicle’s interior.
Q. I left the sunroof open in the rain, and now it smells horrible in my car, what do i do?
A. The most effective way to remove the smell is to get rid of the problem. The first step in the process is to clean all hard surfaces and shampoo (more +/-)all upholstered and carpeted surfaces. Detailstogo also offers an ozone treatment that kills the bacteria that causes the odors. Q. What is a clay bar treatment, and why does my car need it?
A. A clay bar is a specially formulated piece of clay that removes all contaminants from the surface of your paint. Contaminants that cling (more +/-)to your paint cannot be removed by washing or waxing, and a clay bar has potent adhesion properties that stick to surface contaminants without compromising the integrity of the paint. Over time clinging surface contaminants build up on car’s surface and a clay bar treatment is the most effective way to remove these contaminants. Some vehicles that have been exposed to extreme conditions (paint overspray, industrial fallout, tree sap, oils, tar, etc) will need a clay bar treatment to renew the condition of the paint.
